With the holidays about to descend upon us, we all tend to become very sentimental as we look back at holidays past. Apple has always had a penchant for creating some incredibly beautiful messages that have the ability to tug at our heartstrings while also highlighting one of their technologies. Is this year any different?
I would have to say a resounding — yes — but this seems a darker head scratcher at best. Is this a statement piece? Apple has never shied away from taking a stance on anything. How does one connect Frankenstein and Christmas? What path leads from one to another?
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
Is the ad a political statement? Does the Frankenstein monster represent the misfit, rebel, or troublemaker? Does Frankie represent every maligned race, immigrant, or refugee — pining for the sunshine of a friendly gaze in a place that they now call home? Why does it always take the innocence and fearlessness of a child to push away our fears and offer a helping hand & voice?
Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays
‘Cause no matter how far away you roam
When you pine for the sunshine of a friendly gaze
For the holidays, you can’t beat home, sweet home
What I do know is our current world state in not like any other in history. This may be Apple’s way to step up to the plate and give us an uncomfortable look at ourselves and our own monsters, bigotries, and misguided hatreds to help find something that connects us — no mater how small.
Apple Vice President of Marketing Tor Myhren told FastCo that the ad isn’t a response to the election at all. Instead, it is meant to give people a break from all the ads promoting holiday sales.
Huh? Told you it was a head scratcher!
